Serious Slurping in Anaheim
09.12.10
Kappa Ramen just opened in Anaheim sporting a funky ambience in the same strip mall spot as former ramen-ya Lai Lai Ken. Kappa Ramen is a restaurant for serious slurping.
Only those up on Japanese folklore will know Kappa as the mysterious water creatures with a fondness for food, mischief, sumo wrestling and of all things, good manners. It’s chef/partner Eiji Kanazawa hails from Kyoto, Japan and is a familiar face from some of Orange County’s best-known Japanese restaurants, including Genkai in Irvine and Corona Del Mar, and Japon in Lake Forest.
Whether you’re a traditionalist ramen devotee or are open to new classics, you’ll be more than satisfied with the selections at Kappa Ramen. Highlights from the menu include Kyoto style, tonkotsu pork broth ($7.45); ton ton ramen ($8.75), tonsoku pork knuckles served on top of tonkotsu ramen; and Kapp’s signature ramen ($9.95), chef’s tonkotsu broth infused with organic kimchi and served with avocado, spinach, bean sprouts and corn; and chicken ramen ($8.75), char-grilled boneless chicken thigh served on top of shoyu ramen.
Customize an order with extra toppings ($.50 to $2 each) including egg, kimchi, avocado, spinach, diced tomato, bean sprouts, corn,
scallions, garlic, and ginger. Extra chashu and noodles (kaedama) are also available.
Mention Greer’s OC and receive a free Kappa shaved ice with a meal through September! Kappa shaved ice is available in sour apple, mango, pomegranate or blue raspberry.
Other drinks include Japan’s favorite distilled Shochu cocktails ($6) sake and beer by the bottle and pitcher.
Open 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday; 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Oh no! UGG Met Jimmy Choo!
09.12.10
No matter what you do to an UGG, they’re still the ugliest boots known to man. And why, UGG partnered with the polar opposite in style, Jimmy Choo to come out with limited edition boots, I’ll never know. UGG meets Jimmy Choo are available here. If you must, pre-order now. You’re going to have to be satisfied with images; you can’t actually see the real deal until Wednesday, Oct. 6.
That’s when Jimmy Choo at South Coast Plaza will receive sample boots to try on and pre-order (boots should arrive to pick up Oct. 12). Problem is by Oct. 6 they could already be sold out. It’s your call.
Prices range from $495 to $795. Choose from five styles with decorative Jimmy Choo studding, stars, grommets, leopard, zebra and hobo fringing detail. I predict a sell-out, and sadly knock-offs everywhere.
